[ARCHIVED] Water Conservation Month to highlight importance of protecting local water resources

LIVE OAK, FLA., APRIL 4, 2024 – Water conservation is at the core of the Suwannee River Water Management District’s (District) mission to ensure the sustainability of Florida’s water supplies. Due to that, the District’s Governing Board has declared that April be designated as Water Conservation Month.

This is the 26th year of the designation, which provides an opportunity to increase public awareness about the importance of water conservation and highlights the District’s year-round water conservation measures. The hope is it will help encourage Florida residents to develop life-long conservation habits that will, in turn, help preserve and protect local and state water resources now and in the future.

“Most District residents rely on the Floridan aquifer for drinking water,” said Hugh Thomas, executive director of the District. “It is important that we protect this critical resource through a number of water conservation techniques, and residents can do their part by simply reducing the amount of water they use on a daily basis.”

The District is doing its part by implementing projects focused on reducing water use to ensure a sustainable supply of water for people and the environment. During the current fiscal year, the District has partnered with other agencies and government entities to award grants for seven projects, totaling more than $9 million, to support water supply development and conservation.

Speakers, lesson plans, materials, and educational grant funding are all available for schools and community use to further water resource and conservation education. More information can be found at www.MySuwanneeRiver.com under the Community & Residents tab.

Throughout the month of April, the District will be sharing tips on social media about how to easily conserve water. These strategies are easy for residents and business owners to adopt and use throughout their daily routines.

Some tips on reducing water use include:

  • Taking a shower that is less than five minutes long.
  • Turning off the faucet when it is not being used.
  • Washing larger loads of laundry at one time.
  • Using a dishwasher instead of the sink to wash dishes.
